Medals of Major Frederick Vernon Webster, Intelligence Corps (India)

In 1942, Lieutenant-Colonel C. E. Gregory (Royal Garwhal Rifles), GHQ Head of Intelligence in Calcutta, formed Z Force (Burma) from expatriates who had worked in the Burmese forests and Chin, Kachin and Karen to collect intelligence during the dry seasons on Japanese activities. Major Herbert Casten and Captain Webster, an Anglo-Indian, formed a patrol and during the 1943 Chindit Operation Longcloth guided columns along the ‘Secret Track’ that bypassed Japanese garrisons into Burma. Initially, Z Force patrols from India walked to their operational areas; they were later dropped by parachute. In its three years of existence, Z Force was awarded one CBE, two DSOs, four OBEs, four MBEs, seventeen MCs with Bars to two, and sixteen Burma Gallantry Medals.
